This is a photograph of my response tonight, in London, when the moderator asked me how I feel about the romanticized idea that one must suffer in order to be creative. Just to be clear: the double fisted middle fingers that I spontaneously tossed into the air were not directed at the person asking the question. (She was lovely.) The middle fingers were directed at the IDEA that suffering and creativity are naturally linked. I’m so DONE with this idea. I’m so BORED by this tired old, played-out, life-destroying murderer of an idea (invented by pretentious, miserable Germanic, Calvinist, pain-loving men in the 19th century, by the way) that misery is the price you must pay in order to be an artist. It’s fucking bullshit. How did those guys take the most beautiful gift of humanity (imagination! a love of beauty!) and turn it into a death cult? Because they were grim, pleasure-fearing, scarcity-worshipping baby tyrants, that’s how — bless their dumb hearts. They were wrong. How many lives has this idea taken? How much Joy has this idea robbed? Truth is: Creativity is literally generative. It is literally healing. It is literally life-affirming. Creativity is literally a small scale, human-sized reproduction of the miracle of Creation itself. It is Gaia. It is renewal. It is the life force and the beauty urge. It is resurrection. It is grace. Creativity is how we connect, and how we delight ourselves, and how we process pain — not how we make our lives into an altar to misery. Creativity is play. It is not always easy, but that’s part of the wild adventure. Creativity is a gift from the divine that connects us to the source of all existence itself. It is holy. It is female. It is beautiful. F
