Face Value
is an exercise in conceit and denial
or
an embodied public art project
Big Cosmetics is huge. Commenting on female fear of the inherent self and the demonization of aging, thanks to the male-gaze today women often forsake their natural state for the general societal view that value is largely defined by youth, beauty, and purity.
An exercise using a stretch of time, for 30 days the subject/object pulls from a white wardrobe only, drawing attention in regular public life while racking up inevitable marks. stains. The deterioration is immediate and maintaining purity is a struggle impossible. Stagnation and irrelevance isn't far behind, and by painting over the stains is like dabbing cover-up on the skin, the subject/object can only try to alter your perception of her. But mainly, it becomes about perfection and relevance. It begins to eat away at her view of herself, her ability to perform, her ability to adhere to the goal. She thinks they want to see her perpetually new and young. But really they want to see her fall so that they don’t have to look at her anymore and not feel bad about it.
The process of the disruptive event is documented and put on display. The attempt to trick the viewer and oneself that a pure state can be maintained infinitely is in itself the evidence one wishes to conceal.
