Exercising Fear or Scary Piece

2017, Dresden, Germany

THE BOOK YOU ARE NOW HOLDING IS A SINGULAR OBJECT

THERE IS NO OTHER COPY

THIS BOOK IS BEING TRACKED

Following a series of residencies called Best of Horror Loves at STORE Contemporary Gallery in Dresden, Germany, Frances Chiaverini together with Robyn Doty and Katja Cheraneva published Scary Piece, a single book fitted with a tracking device. The residencies themselves were research and performance, repeated again and again although never duplicated, and placed on display in the gallery’s large storefront window gallery space and throughout the building housing it. The events often brought the viewer’s role into question as the performances almost always required their participation, both explicitly and implicitly.

The book object holds writings, images, reflections, and documentation of a series of public facing live happenings (performances) created during that time. As there is only one, the reader is meant to feel a sense of intimacy, a sense of importance, exclusivity and surveillance. The book is meant to be experienced and passed along to a friend or left in public spaces to be found by anyone.
